Avoiding Pool Damage
The beginning of the new season of Autumn not only comes with changes in the landscape, but changes in recreational activities, leading up to the closing of the cottage or the pool for the winter. Properly closing the pool and taking some precautionary measures during the winter is key to protecting your investment. One of the most unfortunate cases we see in our office is claims for pool damage that are not covered. Pool damage resulting from the weight of ice and snow can cost the home owner a substantial amount of money. Some examples of damage to pools in the winter occur when the snow that is on top of a pool starts to melt, it places unwanted pressure on pool walls pushing them outward or ice build-up inside your swimming pool can cause your vinyl pool liner to puncture or tear. You may want to consider having your pool professionally closed or consult your local pool company on ways to protect your pool during the winter and how to close your pool properly. If you have a pool, be it in ground or above ground, it is in your best interest to contact your broker to ask what does your policy does or does not cover for pool damage as this can vary from company to company. Also, be sure to notify your broker that you have had a pool installed to ensure that your policy liability extends to the pool.
